Having New Hardwood Floors Installed? 3 Tips To Keep Them Maintained

Blog

If you are having new hardwood floors installed in your home, you can expect them to last a lifetime. To ensure this you should keep the floors maintained. There are many ways you can do this, three of which are listed below.

Vacuum and Clean

You should vacuum your hardwood floors often. You can do this by using a vacuum or use a microfiber broom. This is important because dirt and crumbs can cause scratches on the hardwood flooring. You may need to vacuum more often if you have pets that shed, kids that make messes, etc.

Along with vacuuming, clean your hardwood floors consistently. First, purchase a wood cleaner that is made for your flooring. Follow the instructions on how to use it. You can mop the floors with the cleaner as long as you do it correctly. The mop should only be damp because you do not want too much water standing on the wood. A microfiber mop is best to use since it will not hold a lot of water.

Watch Humidity Levels

If you have high humidity in your home, this causes moisture in the air. This moisture can also get onto your hardwood flooring. You will notice the hardwood flooring cupping if there is too much moisture. This is caused by moisture getting under the boards which will then cause the board to swell, and the planks will have a raised look on the edges. If the air inside your home is extremely dry, the wood can crack or split.

If there is too much moisture in the air, you should set up a dehumidifier to take care of this problem. If the air is too dry, you should install a humidifier to add moisture. Whatever you purchase, make sure the dehumidifier or humidifier is large enough to add or remove moisture from the entire room. Many of these items also come with a setting that shows you what the humidity level is inside your home.

Refinish

Over time your hardwood flooring will start to look dull. You can refinish the flooring to take care of this. Refinishing is putting a new coat on the wood to make it look new again. You may need to do it more often if you have a large family since there will be a lot more foot traffic on your floors. This is something you should consider hiring a professional to do for you. They will first make repairs if there is any kind of damage to the flooring. They then sand and buff the floor to get it ready for the stain or sealant. They then seal the hardwood flooring for you.

Keeping Feet Comfortable

We often think of flooring as a structural element. It gives us something to stand on, and it provides a bottom surface for a building. These functions of flooring should not be under-estimated. However, they are not the only purpose of flooring. Actually, flooring is also meant to serve the function of keeping your feet comfortable. At least, good flooring seeks to satisfy this goal. Carpet can definitely keep your feet cushioned and healthy, and so can padded vinyl flooring. As you read the articles on this blog, we ask you to keep the following in mind: flooring is multi-functional.
